My side of the family had Christmas this past weekend, so this will be kind of short. Of course the big news was the failed terrorist attack on the plane going to Detroit. Just another reminder that we are still at war and there are people ready to kill Americans. Of course, I doubt it will be a wake-up call that there are people in the world who will kill us regardless of who our President is and how many times he apologizes for us. The initial reaction from members of the Obama administration is telling though. Both Janet Napolitano (DHS Secretary) and Robert Gibbs (press secretary) exclaimed that the system worked. The system worked so well, we had to rely on a Dutchman to subdue the attacker. Meaning, the would-be bomber got through security and onto the plane. Naturally, now Napolitano is claiming her words were taken out of context (you can read the whole context below and tell me what you think). As Ann Coulter points out, Republicans get mad when you take their words out of context. Democrats get mad when you quote them accurately. Also, if the system "worked", why is Napolitano making changes? Normally you don't change something that works.
Along with this, it puts a huge dent in the claim that it is the poor and uneducated who are drawn to terrorism. Of course, if it were that, the usual follow-up is that the United States is responsible for keeping the world poor (4% of the population, 25% of the world's resources). Thus the United States created the terrorist. In this case, the terrorist was very well to do. It has also been pointed out that Al Qaeda's leaders have been Western-educated as well, thus showing it as a choice, rather than being forced into it by the big bad United States. The usual leftist theory also doesn't explain why we don't have billions of terrorists since most of the world is poor.
On a side note, remember when Obama was asked during one of the debates about when human life begins? He said that was above his pay grade. But for some reason, running 1/6th of the U.S. economy via health care and pretty much all the economy through cap and trade isn't?

* Two of the leaders (since corrected to one) who planned the attack were apparently released from Guantanamo Bay. Of course, they should still be in there (who decided they should be released), but remember, Obama wants to close Gitmo.
* Iran trying to smuggle uranium...will Obama do anything about it? I hate to be pessimistic, but I can see us only talking, then by 2012, we can start being told that no one lost Iran (the reference is to China, in which we had subversives directing U.S. policy towards the Chinese Communists and not Chiang Kai-Shek).

The Weekly Enlightenment

The biggest news this week was of course the Senate passing their version of the health care bill. First they overcame the 60-vote supermajority required to end debate on the bill by buying off weak senators like Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu. Even Joe Lieberman voted to end debate, which again just goes to show that at the end of the day, Democrats are still liberal. There are no conservative Democrats. Though it eventually passed with a majority in the Senate, the bills still have to go to committee to be reconciled. There is some hope though, in that the House Democrats are unlikely to vote for the reconciled bill unless it contains an abortion provision, while the Senate will have a tough time keeping Senators in line unless the abortion provision is absent.
Some quick thoughts (and quotes from others):
1. Obama said in his speech about the health care bill cutting the deficit. The only way it cuts the deficit is by paying for taxes for 10 years but only receiving the supposed benefits for 6. So in the 10 years after that, will it continue to cut the deficit? Of course that is unrealistic anyways. Harry Reid would not let anyone see the bill, and the Congressional Budget Office has to score the bill made on assumptions. If the assumptions are faulty (usually are, and in this case most definitely so), the score on the bill will be faulty.
2. In the same speech Obama said the tax cuts are responsible for buying things we can't pay for, meaning tax cuts result in fewer dollars coming into the Treasury. Of course, tax cuts increased revenue to the government (the Laffer curve), so what is Obama talking about? The Democrats always love to bring this up before they are about to hike taxes. Then we will hear media stories of how experts are shocked that revenues to the government didn't increase as much as expected (very short term it will almost always increase). As it comes to paying for things, Obama is projected to spend more in his first year than all of Bush's eight years combined.
3. Harry Reid said in his Senate speech that 2 Americans die every 10 minutes because of our broken system. But the bill wouldn't go into effect until 2014, meaning it is okay with Democrats to supposedly let 420,840 people die because of our health care system (12 per hour x 24 hours x 365 days x 4 years) until the bill finally goes into effect. Which, as we all know, the government will be able to prevent death with their vast knowledge of business and the marketplace.
4. Most politicians have zero expertise in fixing anything or even running a business. Yet in areas like global warming, we are told we must trust the experts (experts meaning only those who agree with Democrats). By that logic, we should not trust them to do anything, correct? Their only expertise is politics.
5. Also we keep being told (by Harry Reid mostly) that we will simply love the Senate health care bill, yet he would not let us see the bill. If we would love it, why not let us see the wonderful bill and end all opposition to it?
6. We were also told when government was deciding the pay of bailout companies that of course it would not mean the government could do that to anyone else. Well, in the Senate bill that we could finally see after they voted on it, it turns out the government was going to regulate the pay for CEOs of insurance companies. Do we live in the Soviet Union or the United States?
7. Thomas Sowell: "Global warming" hysteria is only the latest in this long line of notions, whose main argument is that there is no argument, because it is "science."

The Weekly Enlightenment
Another busy week. Harry Reid is buying off Senate votes with the health care bill. This time, supposedly conservative Democrat Ben Nelson. Just going to show that politicians rarely have principles they stand on. Even Joe Lieberman got a few concessions on the bill and will not stand in the way of blocking the bill. Weeks ago, it was Mary Landrieu with a $300 million buy-off. Of course, we still don't have any money to spend (and China is talking about not buying any more US debt). President Obama in his 60 Minutes interview talked about not helping out fat-cat bankers on Wall Street. This is so laughable, since he doesn't mind helping out his fat-cat donors, helping out his fat-cat supporters (like ACORN), or paying off fat-cat politicians with taxpayer dollars. All of politics is about paying off those who helped you. Notice too that this is a pattern with Obama. Attacking the productive in our society.
Speaking of fat-cats...does Obama care about those who actually worked to get to where they are? Democrat politicians and liberals always make it seem like people in the free market don't earn their keep, but it is those politicians who don't earn their keep and promote policies that reward those who don't produce.
MUST READ
* How many of these kind of statements do we not catch? "The world recognized the need to confront Saddam Hussein when he invaded Kuwait". Democrats at the time, including Joe Biden (current U.S. Vice President) and John Kerry (2004 Democratic nominee for President), didn't even recognize the need to confront Saddam. If only we had a media that called both parties on their statements.
* A great series of excerpts from the next book I will be buying regarding the housing boom and bust.
* It seems as if Obama's plan all along was to institute single-payer through expanding Medicare.

* Ever notice something about evidence that gives doubt to global warming? We are told that this isn't contrary proof to global warming. Same thing with any liberal beliefs,like Darwinism, DDT, embryonic stem cells, etc. Any contrary proof must be ignored, downplayed, or suppressed.
* Remember when Tea Party protests were being labeled as astroturfing? Meaning they were not real protests by ordinary people, but staged. Of course, like usual, the astroturfing happens on the left. Notice too that the signs are in English (not that it constitutes proof of astroturfing, but that it might be a ploy to lure susceptible US media).
* Tony Blair in so many words saying that even if the science isn't correct we need to do something. Huh?

* Democrats continue to pull out all the stops, citing phony studies from left-wing advocacy groups.
Silly Liberals
* More tolerance from lefties. And more examples from the past for their tolerance for opposing viewpoints.

The Weekly Enlightenment
Not much for commentary this week besides Rush Limbaugh's take on "hope and change". He calls it "hoax and chains".
MUST READ

* The EPA has ruled that greenhouse gases are hazardous to humans, which allows the EPA to regulate them. For one thing, we exhale carbon dioxide...does that make us pollutants as well (and doesn't plant life rely on carbon dioxide)?
* The EPA definitely has it out for carbon. Of course they are trying to save the planet...right?
* A long but great summary of the whole climate fraud. A new development can be found on page 8 about the possible use of a fudge factor which is skewed to alter the data more heavily in the last 40 years.
* One would think the wonders of government-run health care would be showing in Canada and Great Britain. As it turns out though, Britain is among the worst in heart and cancer survival rates. If only our media would actually report it.

The Weekly Enlightenment
Another slow week, and to be honest I have been a little detached since the Thanksgiving break. No worries it will be better next week.
MUST READ
* Henry Waxman saying that government will need to help shape US media. This should worry everyone out there. The talk right now is just about bailing out newspapers, but when have you known government to stop at anything, especially the federal government? I know Waxman knows about the new media emerging on the internet, and people like him just simply don't like it.
* Howard Dean declares the debate between capitalism and socialism is over. Seems to be a common theme among Democrats calling the debate over.
* The science of climate change is not settled.
* Every Minnesotan should be outraged by this. Deciding who should be teachers, not on how well they teach, but how well they adopt leftist principles.
* Peer-reviewed studies. Some are saying that if their is fraud in the climate change research, peer-reviewed research will expose it. Except that, in this case, from the leaked emails, it was clear the peer-review process had been manipulated by them.
What Health Care Problem?
* Notice a couple things with this article. First, the article talks about the Senate approving "free" mammograms for women. Does that mean that it now doesn't cost anything? Of course not. Insurance companies will have to raise rates on other procedures. Do it enough, and you will see fewer and fewer insurance companies in business. Second, last week didn't we hear HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius downplay the mammogram at age 50? Now we see the Senate using that as a hammer to try to enforce policy. Imagine what will happen when we are all in the government plan.
Global Warming Hoax
* A defense of the incandescent light bulb, also possibly exposing some myths about claims made regarding the compact fluorescent.
* Remember all the ethanol that Congress mandated on gasoline refiners? Turns out, it won't be used. As the authors point out, if they could get that wrong, how easy would it be for them to get something big wrong on health care? Or any subject? Note the underlying problem here. When not in a free market, special interests win out, not what is in the best interest of the country or the people. Not to worry though. When more cars fail because of this, government will step in to prop up a "failing business model".
* The IPCC head, on one hand saying the leaked emails will do no harm, and on the other saying we need to tax unsustainable lifestyles. A truer tyrant one cannot find. Except perhaps Al Gore.
* Take into account the previous article about the climate debate not being over, and then witness more and more hysteria about how many people will die due to it. According to climate scientists, is there any disaster that cannot be contributed to climate change?
Can't Win a War This Way
* Navy SEALS, putting their lives on the line, being charged for punching a terrorist in the face. We have decided we will NOT pull out all stops when waging this war while the enemy uses our own system against us.

* Wow. Environmentalists pound nails into trees to prevent a little logging (possibly), resulting in all of the trees being cut down for safety concerns.

The Weekly Enlightenment
A short week this week as I was in Minnesota and South Dakota for Thanksgiving. To all those we saw, it was very nice seeing you and we had a great time.
The big news this past week was revelations about some main scientists in the IPCC (United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), who have been fanning the flames of climate change alarmism, found to try to silence skeptics, possibly hide data despite requests about freedom of information, and even possibly falsifying data. As more details develop I will be glad to post them. The reaction to these has been typical. The media is ignoring it or arguing that those who leaked it should be punished (how about revelations about the SWIFT program), the UN and other IPCC members are trying to say this isn't indicative of the entire IPCC, and the administration continues to insist on the consensus and the science is pure. I thought these were scientists above reproach, the purest of the pure, and so on. Obviously not.
Of course I don't think science is all that pure. There are probably quite a few groups that are either funded by the government, funded by companies that have a vested interest in the outcome, or simple advocacy groups that appear decidedly anti-capitalist (Center for Science in the Public Interest).

While I can see some merit to the argument, not only were the media happy about publishing other private things - Palin emails, Pentagon Papers, and SWIFT, but they have been seriously derelict in publishing or making known any criticisms of global warming.

While I can see some merit to the argument, not only were the media happy about publishing other private things - Palin emails, Pentagon Papers, and SWIFT, but they have been seriously derelict in publishing or making known any criticisms of global warming.

The Weekly Enlightenment
As far as weeks go in the Obama administration, this one didn't seem all that exciting. I actually kind of miss the boring weeks of the Bush administration. Oh well.
For news this week the big one was Sarah Palin's book coming out. As usual, the media had a frenzy. I don't know what it is, but I swear liberals hate Palin even more than Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, and George W. Bush put together. Even more funny was the AP assigning 11 reporters to fact-check her book. Where were the fact checkers checking out Obama during his candidacy? The Wall Street Journal had a good comparison.
"An Associated Press dispatch, written by Erica Werner and Richard Alonso-Zaldivar, compares the House and Senate ObamaCare bills. We'd like to compare this dispatch to the AP's dispatch earlier this week "fact checking" Sarah Palin's new book. Here goes:
Number of AP reporters assigned to story:
• ObamaCare bills: 2
• Palin book: 11
Number of pages in document being covered:
• ObamaCare bills: 4,064
• Palin book: 432
Number of pages per AP reporter:
• ObamaCare bill: 2,032
• Palin book: 39.3
On a per-page basis, that is, the AP devoted 52 times as much manpower to the memoir of a former Republican officeholder as to a piece of legislation that will cost trillions of dollars and an untold number of lives. That's what they call accountability journalism."
Right now Palin can't force anyone to do anything (Obama can). As usual, some in the media are saying she is irrelevant while others are saying she has some sort of supernatural power.
A few samples:
* Norah O' Donnell fact-checks a Palin fan (a young one at that). Perhaps someone should tell Norah that the Vice Presidential candidate during the campaign is supposed to agree with the Presidential candidate, even if they don't, presumably to reinforce unity.
* Former editor of the Chicago Tribune suffers from PDS.
* It is obvious how much they hate Palin and her followers, but notice also that it is liberals who are constantly focused on race.
* And of course, the cover of Newsweek showing Sarah Palin in shorts. Anything to destroy her.
Wow. No one gets under their skin as much as Palin does.
Some short observations:
* Recently Obama held a job summit, the express purpose of it being NOT about creating jobs. What is it about then? Again, how many summits does this President need?
* Price controls on Medicare...how is that not the same thing as cutting reimbursements to doctors? They get about 20-25% reimbursement right now. Presumably inflation will occur so that price control means they are getting something like 15% instead since the price has gone up but they can't charge more.

* McCarthy is right. The decision to bring KSM and other terrorists to civilian court is one of the most irresponsible ever decided by a President.
* I would normally say unbelievable, but on second thought I can see Obama bowing to other world leaders.
* The AP finds errors in Palin's book, that...well...aren't errors.
* In the author's own words, the KSM trial will be an intelligence bonanza for Al Qaeda.
* The new liberal talking point is that Moussaoui trial was in civilian court and that no one complained. Andy McCarthy quickly debunks that and points out that there are some judges who will side with the enemy.
