It was also pretty interesting that Obama kept saying he wanted to talk about the issues and chastised Republicans numerous times about talking points (when they were reading from the previous bills or bringing up legitimate concerns, like McCain bringing up special interests in the bill). Here is how Democrats talk about the issues:
OBAMA: I can certainly remember Malia coming into the kitchen one day and saying, "I can't breathe, Daddy." ... My mother didn't have reliable health care and she died of ovarian cancer.
REID: A young man by the name of Jesus Gutierrez.
MURRAY: I remember a little boy, who was 11 years old, who's name was Marcellus.
HOYER: I had a message on my machine: "I was just diagnosed with a tumor."
HARKIN: Got a letter yesterday from a farmer in Iowa.
ROCKEFELLER: I knew this kid, Samuel Ford, and he had leukemia.
CONARD: My own father-in-law in his final illness.
WAXMAN: People from California who were told by Anthem WellPoint that their insurance was going to go up 39 percent.
DODD: A guy in my state, Kevin Galvin.
SLAUGHTER: Her sister died. This poor woman had no dentures. She wore her dead sister's teeth.
That doesn't really sound like the issues to me. It sounds like sob stories designed to bypass the real issues and any meaningful debate.

The Weekly Enlightenment
Another busy week. Harry Reid is buying off Senate votes with the health care bill. This time, supposedly conservative Democrat Ben Nelson. Just going to show that politicians rarely have principles they stand on. Even Joe Lieberman got a few concessions on the bill and will not stand in the way of blocking the bill. Weeks ago, it was Mary Landrieu with a $300 million buy-off. Of course, we still don't have any money to spend (and China is talking about not buying any more US debt). President Obama in his 60 Minutes interview talked about not helping out fat-cat bankers on Wall Street. This is so laughable, since he doesn't mind helping out his fat-cat donors, helping out his fat-cat supporters (like ACORN), or paying off fat-cat politicians with taxpayer dollars. All of politics is about paying off those who helped you. Notice too that this is a pattern with Obama. Attacking the productive in our society.
Speaking of fat-cats...does Obama care about those who actually worked to get to where they are? Democrat politicians and liberals always make it seem like people in the free market don't earn their keep, but it is those politicians who don't earn their keep and promote policies that reward those who don't produce.
MUST READ
* How many of these kind of statements do we not catch? "The world recognized the need to confront Saddam Hussein when he invaded Kuwait". Democrats at the time, including Joe Biden (current U.S. Vice President) and John Kerry (2004 Democratic nominee for President), didn't even recognize the need to confront Saddam. * Ever notice something about evidence that gives doubt to global warming? We are told that this isn't contrary proof to global warming. Same thing with any liberal beliefs,like Darwinism, DDT, embryonic stem cells, etc. Any contrary proof must be ignored, downplayed, or suppressed.
* Remember when Tea Party protests were being labeled as astroturfing? Meaning they were not real protests by ordinary people, but staged. Of course, like usual, the astroturfing happens on the left. Notice too that the signs are in English (not that it constitutes proof of astroturfing, but that it might be a ploy to lure susceptible US media).
* Tony Blair in so many words saying that even if the science isn't correct we need to do something. Huh?

* Democrats continue to pull out all the stops, citing phony studies from left-wing advocacy groups.
Silly Liberals
* More tolerance from lefties. And more examples from the past for their tolerance for opposing viewpoints.

The Weekly Enlightenment
Wow, so much this week it is going to be hard to limit all of it. First a few pieces of commentary...
The big push on health care has always been about the 47 million uninsured. Instead of upsetting the health insurance system that most people are happy with (according to all the polls I have heard), why not just reform Medicare to cover them? I don't even buy the notion that the system is broken. You have people like Obama and Pelosi continually saying our system is broken, so many believe it despite most people being happy with the coverage they get. It is the same thing when Bush was President. The media kept pounding the drumbeat that we were in a recession, even before we were in the recession. Polls said people were doing fine but they weren't so sure about their neighbors...after all, the media was running sob story after sob story. Ultimately, of course, we know government intervention does not work. After Medicare, Medicaid, prescription drug, SCHIP, state programs, etc., we still have millions who don't have coverage. So what makes anyone think it will somehow be better with more government intervention?
Miscellaneous
1. Pelosi is now calling the public option the competitive option or the consumer option...why not just call it the sunshine option, or the puppies option? It would be just as deceptive.
2. Democrats claim the health care bill will contain an opt-out option. But not in the sense any normal person would think of it. States could opt out of receiving benefits, but their citizens would still have to pay for it through taxes. This is always the Democrat sleight-of-hand. Claim their is a choice even if realistically it means everyone would choose one option because of circumstances. It is the same thing with the Post Office. Companies can compete with the Post Office but only if they service the entire country. Who could do that right off the bat? Even UPS and Fedex could not do it overnight. So Democrats can claim the Post Office is not immune from competition even though practically no one can compete.
Finally, from the Wall Street Journal, the title "A Sign of Racial Progress".
"Politico's Josh Gerstein raises the question: Why hasn't there been more commentary along the lines of our lead item today? (We're paraphrasing.) He raises the obvious explanation, media bias, then offers some further speculation:
Others say there's a larger phenomenon at work--in the story line the media wrote about Obama's presidency. For Bush, the theme was that of a Big Business Republican who rode the family name to the White House, so stories about secret energy meetings and a certain laziness, intellectual and otherwise, fit neatly into the theme, to be replayed over and over again. Obama's story line was more positive from the start: historic newcomer coming to shake up Washington. So the negatives that sprung up around Obama--like a sense that he was more flash than substance--track what negative coverage he's received, captured in a recent "Saturday Night Live" skit that made fun of his lack of accomplishments in office. 'There may well be almost an unconscious effort on the part of the media to give Obama a bit more slack because he is more likable, because he is the first African-American president. That plays into it,' said Sherry Bebitch Jeffe, a political analyst at the University of Southern California.
Is Jeffe allowed to say that some people in the media are hoping Obama succeeds because he's black? Six years ago, a similar comment about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb cost Rush Limbaugh his job as an NFL commentator. That such statements are no longer verboten is a sign of racial progress in Obama's America."

Economic Ignorance
* Most people would be inclined to think this a bad thing. After all, why should you get punished for being a good customer? Until you realize, all businesses are forced to charge higher prices because of bad customers. Some customers will have insufficient funds and never pay their bill, sometimes you take customers to court, theft, etc. All that costs money, and it is borne by good customers.
Democrat Deception
* Stimulus jobs created or saved were overstated by thousands. Why not just claim credit for the millions who have kept their jobs through the recession?
* Obama still suffers from Bush Derangement Syndrome. For some reason he cannot refrain from attacking Bush when he is being defensive about himself.
What Media Bias?
* When they do something well, we should applaud them, and I do. This time raising questions about the government's ability to manage a health care bureaucracy.
What Science
* As Ann Coulter would say, don't dare question evolution, despite mounting evidence against it. Case in point.
Think it can't happen here?
* Police in the UK are told what words they can and cannot use, among them "evening" and "afternoon". How Orwellian.
* More bad news from Britain. Databases of protestors who have attended rallies.

The Weekly Enlightenment
The biggest news this week was the townhall protestors. Democrats have been going home for the August recess and holding townhall meetings to try to persuade people that government-run health care (which is an inevitability) is a good thing. People are responding negatively and the Democrats don't know how to respond. They were given basic talking points and they just aren't working. So, Democrats are responding both ways they always do: avoiding the debate altogether and calling the opposition names. Many Congressmen are holding tele-townhalls where they control the audience or not having the townhalls at all. They were already not publicizing the events very well and I wouldn't be surprised if some have been canceled already. The other response is name-calling. The protestors are Nazis, stooges of insurance companies, liars, and possibly un-American (purported New York Times editorial by Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer calls townhall protestors un-American). They really DO fashion themselves as kings and queens and us the subjects.
Great analogy in the WSJ regarding economic reporting touting slowing job losses: "We’d like to thank all of our readers who’ve written in to ask how our diet is going. Very well, thank you. Between the beginning of April and the end of June, we gained only 2 pounds, compared with a 4-pound gain during the first three months of the year. So our weight is definitely improving." It's the same thing with President Obama and job losses. Wait until the tax cuts expire.
Not much for articles this week but Obama tries to keep the focus on him and his policies, which, he is very skilled at.
Must Read
* Obama is trying to quash free speech. But, let's say Obama's motives are pure. If a conservative ever gets in office, what would happen? According to liberals, a conservative would abuse this power and spy on American citizens, encouraging people to spy on one another. So why is it a good idea to even start something like this? It's one thing I will never understand. Any policy or thing I believe I always put the shoe on the other foot. If the reverse were true, would I support it?
* Apparently the protestors are wearing swastikas according to House Speaker Pelosi.
* It is the goal. I don't know how many times we have to tell people, but this is what it is all about.
* And in case, you still don't believe me, in Obama's own words.

The Weekly Enlightenment
The big uproar the past couple of weeks is the Henry Louis Gates issue. Basically Gates (who is black) came home and couldn't get into his house so he forced it open. A passerby called police thinking it was a break-in, and Gates became belligerent. He was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. President Obama, acknowledging he didn't have all the facts, nonetheless condemned the police, saying they acted stupidly. Gates turned it into a racial issue since the arresting officer was white. The other two officers, one black and one Hispanic, back up the white officer's story. For one thing, it is something Obama should never have been involved in. Second, since he didn't have all the facts he shouldn't have said anything. Third, even with the beer at the White House, Obama still didn't apologize. Why not? He was obviously wrong in speaking out prematurely, but even more wrong not owning up to it. He tried to switch gears saying it is a teachable moment about race. No it wasn't. It was about trying to exploit a situation he had no business saying anything on in the first place. This prompted Brit Hume of Fox News to comment, "This president who travels the world apologizing for his country couldn't quite apologize for himself."
Some media outlets saying recession is over (unemployment is still going up and other economic indictors aren't looking as good, but for argument's sake). Then can't we cancel the stimulus money that hasn't yet been spent? I've heard as low as 6% of the stimulus has been spent. Then we should also put to rest the notion that somehow the government can spend its way out of the recession. Not that we didn't know that already, with Japan's stagflation and that we couldn't spend our way out of the Great Depression, but fine. Sometimes we have to repeat history a few times to finally get the picture.
Great point on redstate.com - Lasik and plastic surgery are getting cheaper, and they're the ones where free market conditions actually apply.

* Dodd and Conrad got sweetheart deals . Didn't Democrats say they were going to have the most ethical Congress in history? And where is the Democratic leadership demanding they step down? Would this stand if these were Republican senators?
* We are finally having a discussion on race (though we've been talking about it for decades), but now Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder are silent. Why?
* This is scary. How does Obama propose to do that? Have a bureaucrat in every doctor's office? Obviously the conclusion is inevitable. If doctors will get penalized for not being able to treat bad patients, why would they take on bad patients at all? It is the exact same thing as doctors opting out of taking Medicare patients.
* Obama keeps saying his opponents are playing the politics of fear, but that is exactly what Obama is doing. When he's not blaming Bush.
* This has to give one confidence if government is going to run health care.

* The Obama birth certificate argument for many is that they hope he wasn't a US citizen by birth, and therefore wouldn't be eligible for the Presidency. That's why I haven't covered it. Not that it isn't important, but just that we have bigger fish to fry. My issue with it was that Obama promised to be open (unlike Bush) and bring in change, both of which are not true. It's about honesty. One other problem is that liberal bloggers try to perpetuate it and make it seem as if it is a bigger deal than it actually is.

The Weekly Enlightenment
Well, I've been without internet and on vacation for a total of two weeks now. Sorry I haven't sent anything out, I thought we were getting disconnected one day, and it appeared to be a day early. Anyways, I don't have many stories, and even if I did, they would be slightly outdated.
So here is what has been bugging me the last couple weeks...
President Obama and Vice President Biden keep insisting they have been misreading the economy. How exactly do we know they aren't misreading Iran, North Korea, China, Russia, etc.? Their "misreading" doesn't exactly give me confidence about them.
Great point by Rush Limbaugh that the bad economy is a backdoor to universal health care. For some reason, health care is tied to your employer. Besides hampering small businesses with this added cost (which likely reduces your salary that you could use to purchase your own insurance), if businesses are doing bad, that means more and more businesses will close or lay off people. Then that affects their health coverage. So the higher unemployment, the more people will be clamoring for universal care.
Democrat senator Pat Leahy said don't rush to judgement on Sotomayor. Yet it was fine to do that to Roberts, Alito, Clarence Thomas, or even Robert Bork. Why is it so important to have a woman on the court? I want the best people on the court. If it was all white men, or black men, or all women, or all Hispanics, what difference does it make? I'm not saying the current crop by any means is the best and brightest, but I am against making their gender or race the sole reason for their hiring.
The big talk in any Supreme Court nominee hearing is stare decisis, which means respecting precedent. Where was the love for stare decisis before abortion, criminal rights (Miranda, warrants, confessions, lawyers), campaign finance, property rights, etc. It just means respecting laws liberals like.
Another great point from Rush: Sotomayor says O'Connor can't mean what she said when O'Connor said a wise old man and a wise old woman will reach the same conclusion...what prevents Sotomayor from saying the Constitution doesn't mean what it says?
If Obama had been a Republican, would the media have been celebrating the first black President? We can see if Palin gets the nomination, we'll see if the media is celebratory about the first woman President. Democrats think all black people should think alike and support Obama because Obama is black like them. Will they do the same with women if Palin is the nominee?
Finally, a great suggestion from Ed Morrissey. If there is a right to health care, isn't there a right to legal care? Of course Democrats wouldn't go for this, trial lawyers are one of their biggest constituencies.
So here is what has been bugging me the last couple weeks...
President Obama and Vice President Biden keep insisting they have been misreading the economy. How exactly do we know they aren't misreading Iran, North Korea, China, Russia, etc.? Their "misreading" doesn't exactly give me confidence about them.
Great point by Rush Limbaugh that the bad economy is a backdoor to universal health care. For some reason, health care is tied to your employer. Besides hampering small businesses with this added cost (which likely reduces your salary that you could use to purchase your own insurance), if businesses are doing bad, that means more and more businesses will close or lay off people. Then that affects their health coverage. So the higher unemployment, the more people will be clamoring for universal care.
Democrat senator Pat Leahy said don't rush to judgement on Sotomayor. Yet it was fine to do that to Roberts, Alito, Clarence Thomas, or even Robert Bork. The Weekly Enlightenment
Another great week. The biggest news was of course of Sarah Palin resigning as governor of Alaska. It's really no surprise. Multiple ethics complaints have been brought against Palin, all of which have been dismissed, but they keep bringing them. Obviously it takes time and money to fight these battles in court, and all the time is spent NOT being the governor of Alaska. Much speculation is that it is to run for President in 2012. May or may not be true, we'll have to see. Since it is all speculation, for now we just have to take it at face value. For this decision, however, Palin has been the target of a lot of vitriol from the press. Which is weird. For someone who is supposed to be irrelevant and stupid, they sure are focusing a lot of time on her. You can be assured when the press and Democrats attack someone, it's not because they actually are stupid or irrelevant (Rush Limbaugh has been called irrelevant many times throughout the past 20 years). It is because that person threatens their power. Palin connected with ordinary voters as being not part of the Washington establishment. She rallied conservative voters, many of whom would not vote for the maverick McCain and were demoralized from out of control Republicans. If she were really irrelevant, it would not be necessary to even bother with her, but they are. And she isn't.
Great point by Mark Steyn and Sean Hannity: Biden now says they didn't know how bad the mess was. But during the campaign, Obama kept saying it was the worst crisis since the Great Depression. Was he understating the problem by comparing it to the Great Depression? Of course not. Election year, trying to spin the economy as the fault of Bush, fine. But there's no way they underestimated how bad it was unless their talk before the election was deceitful.
Nuke reduction. Obama talked with Medvedev of Russia about reducing our nuclear arsenal. Put aside the question of whether Russia would actually reduce its arsenal. The whole idea behind this is that if only America would reduce its nukes, other countries would follow suit. So basically it is the same thing we always see with Obama, that no matter the circumstance, it is America's fault.

Notice a Pattern?
Anyone else notice a pattern with Obama of consistently setting goals for himself and the country that are completely unmeasurable?
First it was the "create or save" jobs. Everyone admitted there was no way this could possibly be counted. What counts as a saved job?
Next it was the stimulus money, much of which isn't even stimulus. How do we decide that it has done good? So far the only standard is those in favor it saying that it would have been worse without it.
Now Obama has agreed with other G-8 leaders to reduce global warming by 3 degrees over the next...probably 100 years. Again, how is this to be measured? If the temperature does rise by 3 degrees it will be said then it would have raised 6 degrees (i.e. they underestimated how bad it was).
Finally, there is a debate about a second stimulus. Warren Buffett is apparently calling for one as well. Put aside where the money comes from (either taxpayers or you print the money), but how will we measure if it works or not?
Of course, I have already alluded to it, but the common thread among these is the answer is always that it would have been much worse had we not done anything. Obviously this makes sense from a political standpoint, as you cannot be accused of doing nothing, but I thought we were going to get a big dose of hope and change.

The Weekly Enlightenment
Happy 4th of July! Iraq and Afghanistan have taken the backseat as of late, given the domestic policies Obama is pushing, but we should always remember those who fight for us. Many have given the ultimate sacrifice and deserve our utmost gratitude and support as they continue to fight for us. Many times it seems we only honor them on holidays, which is very unfortunate. May God watch over them, and may God continue to bless the United States.
This week seemed a bit slower as far as news was concerned. My favorite comment of the entire week came from Rush Limbaugh. He said the two most meaningless words in the Obama administration are "Obama said". They do seem to be pretty unreliable. Even now, though Obama said the unemployment rate wouldn't creep beyond 8% if we passed the stimulus, the unemployment rate is 9.5%. Instead of making one think perhaps their policies aren't working, Biden came out saying they underestimated how bad the economic situation was. Seems like another veiled attempt at blaming Bush.
Health Care
* Obama pretends that costs have been rising for no good reason. Of course there is a lot more advancement, especially in technology, which is expensive. It is also funny when they say the free market has failed, when government intervention has never been worse. Let's reform it!
* Massachusetts is not a good model to copy.
* A great article about the horrors of Canadian and British health care.
Silly Liberals
* No surprise, but Obama's townhalls are staged. Worse yet, one of the participants was given a pass from the White House. Is there no level Obama won't stoop to?
* 50 reasons to stop the Waxman-Markey bill.
What Global Warming?
* The EPA tried to suppress a skeptical report regarding the science of global warming. Strange. I thought Obama was going to be a friend to science. And naturally, the U.S. media ignores it.
* Remember that the plan from Democrats has always been higher prices.
* Remember this when Al Gore and the like claim a consensus.

* Well, the Iraqi military is taking over major cities. Naturally Obama is trying to take credit for it, as are many Democrats, though they opposed Bush every step of the way.

* It was Zelaya, not the military, that was attempting a coup. Too bad our media won't report the details.
